Australian drug mule Cassie Sainsbury will stand trial and face 30 years behind bars for trying to smuggle cocaine out of Colombia after a judge rejected her plea deal. The 22-year-old, who was pictured laughing with her mother just moments earlier, burst into tears as she was led handcuffed out of the Bogota court by prison officers. She had previously agreed to reveal the identities of those involved in a smuggling ring in exchange for a sentence reduction from 20 to six years at El Buen Pastor jail. But Judge Sergio Leon suspended an earlier hearing after Sainsbury said she'd only agreed to try and smuggle almost six kilograms of cocaine in her luggage when her family had been threatened. She doubled down on those claims in court on Wednesday afternoon local time, saying she had been held at gunpoint and feared for her life.
